Cite That Tweet!!

Trying to use social media sources, like Facebook & Twitter, for research papers has been pretty difficult due to a lack of standards for documentation. Recently both APA and MLA have taken care of that problem by providing basic rules for citing major types of social media.

And Aditi Rao, who blogs at TeachBytes  has made it even easier by compiled that information into this handy table.

 

 Please note that for Twitter, you must include the entire Tweet for both APA & MLA. More information on documenting your research is available at the Ritz Library's Citation Style Guide.

Web Streaming comes to DCC!!

Take a look at the Library's MyDCC Welcome page and you'll see a link for "DCC Livestream" This is the Web broadcasting system the college is using to stream selected DCC events, including some lyceum programs this school year. Events to be  streamed in the next month include the following:

Lyceum,Thursday, October 11, 12:30pm – Leo Ribuffo
Lyceum, Thursday, November 1, 12:30pm – Emily Hunter

Besides watching live events, you can also view archived programs such as this year's commencment, Eric Foner's Constitution Day lecture & Spring semester dance and music performances

Need some nursing training? Use MEDCOM!!

Medcom Trainex is an web-based site that provides access to training videos in the health sciences. Each video offers either a complete training session for a variety of subjects such as patient care, lab safety or proper material handling procedures. The individual videos can also be parts of a longer training session -- check the list thoroughly for additional videos that have the same title as the one you initially viewed.

You may access Medcom through the Library page at MyDCC, there's a link for it in the middle column.

Check out Jstor!

Faculty and staff now have access to Jstor, a full text database service that provides current issues & archives of core scholarly journals in the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences. We have three Jstor collections, Arts & Sciences I, II, III. These collections contain almost 400 journals and  cover a wide variety of academic fields including:

► Economics	► Music	► Mathematics
► History	► Sociology	► Classics
► Political Science	►Performing Arts	► Area Studies

One of the unique features of JStor is that journals coverage begins with the first issue published, so that sometimes you can  retrieve articles from the 19th century or earlier, a great feature when you are looking at a subject from an historical angle.  Another handy feature is that Jstor articles are easily accessed through Google Scholar.

One limitation of Jstor is that some publications do not allow Jstor to publish the current year's issues. If you need such an "embargoed" document, remember the library can get it for you through Interlibrary Loan

Latest, Greatest Playaways!

This summer 26 new Playways have been added to the Ritz Library's growing audio book collection. Easy, portable and simple to use, Playaways are about the size of an old-fashioned audio cassette, but instead of having to insert 10 cassettes while listening to a book on tape, the entire book is contained on one device.  Run on batteries, Playaways weigh next to nothing and fit easily in a back pocket. Any standard headphones fit the jack.  Besides the devices themselves, the Ritz Library provides you with batteries, headphones and even an audio cable for your car if you do not have one.
