Dutchess Community College Health Fair

On Wednesday, March 26th between 11am and 2pm, Dutchess Community College hosted a local health and wellness fair. Multiple vendors set up tables in the Greenspan cafeteria for the community to view. Practitioners of yoga, Reiki, Aikido, Karate, reflexology, and massage therapy were available to discuss, and in some cases demonstrate their modality of healing. Other displays provided handouts relating to diabetes, your heart, and general health. Students from the ESW (Exercise Science and Wellness) program had fliers available, and volunteers from Donate Life America talked about organ donation in New York State.

The Francis U. and Mary F. Ritz Library's display focused on resources available in the library for researching and finding out additional information about health and wellness.

Stop by the library for your copy of "Wellness Begins at the DCC Library" flier. Databases that are available on and off campus, e-books, and selected websites are shown. The fliers may be found at the Reference desk.

Plagiarism, cont.

Plagiarism, are you guilty of it? Maybe. Maybe not. In February, the library blogged "Steal this Byte!!!" which contained a short little quiz called Plagiarism Test to help individuals understand how easy it is to intentionally or unintentionally borrow other people's material. However, some people may be interested in further defining and exploring what plagiarism is. The website, Plagiarism.org can help you do so. Fundamental questions such as "what is" and "types of plagiarism" are answered as well as FAQs, citations, and information on how to plan your research paper.

Celebrate Women's History Month

Mission Statement of the Women's Committee: to celebrate women and their achievements. To promote the visibility of women on campus. To explore issues important to the professional and personal success of women. To provide the college community with "A Guide to Women's Services" and to maintain a referral service of campus and community services. To provide an example of women's solidarity on campus. To sponsor and celebrate Women's History Month, highlight issues unique to women and encourage women on campus to recognize their full potential. Browsing My World

There's a (relatively) new browser in town... Flock.

Why flock to Flock? First, Netscape Navigator is being discontinued as of March 1, 2008. To find out more, click here. For many of you, this doesn't matter, but for those who like to use a variety of browsers, losing Netscape is sad. In its heyday, Netscape was the innovator in web browsing. Second, the internet is maturing. Web 2.0 is all the buzz, and social networking is the way of the future, or should I say, the way of the now: del.icio.us, Twitter, YouTube, blogging, photo posts, Facebook, etc. are common tools for many of us. Flock brings together many aspects of social networking all under a tab labeled "My World" and let's you modify your "world" accordingly. No longer do you have to add to my favorites, and add to del.icio.us separately, but with one click you can do both functions at the same time. Click an icon for RSS feeds, media bar, people - all conveniently located. I won't begin to say I am an expert at Flock - I downloaded it yesterday, but it does have my attention. Help Desk Services

EXPANDED HELP DESK SERVICES AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS

A help desk for students is now up and running in the lobby of the Orcutt Student Services Building.

Any students who need help in logging into myDCC, or getting their grades online can drop by the help desk in the SSB lobby to receive assistance by student workers trained to provide these services as well as others pertaining to accessing and utilizing the College’s various electronic resources.

The hours of operation for the Student Help Desk are Monday through Thursday 9 am to 7 pm and Fridays 10 am to 1 pm. The location is the Lobby of the Orcutt Student Services Building.
